"Belly dance" is the popular Western term for a fun style of social dance that originates in the Middle East and North Africa.
While many movements are done with the hips and torso, this is, in fact, a full body dance! Arms, hands, feet, and hips move together in a beautiful combination.
Socially, this dance style is passed down through the generations. Kids grow up dancing for fun with their moms, aunts, grandmothers and cousins, and this experience often carries into adulthood as an expression of joy.
The word for dance in Arabic is "raqs". "Raqs sharqi" (Eastern dance) is the term for the sparkly style you see in performances. "Raqs beledi" (country or popular dance) is homestyle social dance.
In this belly dance class, kids and their grown-ups will delve into dance and rhythms together in a warm and supportive environment.
You'll have fun learning movements through instruction and games while incidentally improving your posture and balance, developing flexibility safely, and strengthening your entire body while laughing together and having a fun time. Jingly hip scarves are available for everyone!
You'll also learn about the cultural context of belly dance. Once you start to learn about the roots of this dance style you'll be even more intrigued! In the cultures of origin, belly dance is primarily a social, celebratory dance form, done by regular people with their friends for enjoyment and expression, as well as by professionals for entertainment at all different types of joyful events like weddings, baby-naming celebrations, and more.
Everyone is welcome in belly dance class! The Bigs & Little class is specifically for child and adult pairs to learn together.

There are numerous coffee shops in the vicinity, as well as the lovely Portland Museum of Art sculpture garden across the street, which is free and open to the public.
I was looking for a safe, fun environment to learn bellydancing after having a couple of kids and wanting to embrace my body once again. I was nervous having never taken a belly dance class before, and did not know what to expect. I have nothing but positive things to say about Rosa Noreen and her amazingly welcoming and educational belly dance classes. She is so patient, kind, and encouraging to newcomers and experienced dances alike. The quality of her teaching shows in her students beautiful work, I cannot speak highly enough of my experiences at Bright Star World Dance. The best place to learn, hands down! — Samantha F., student
