Leila will talk about her experiences as a professional belly dancer in Cairo for 13 years, including during the 2012 revolution. There is a beautiful subtlety to Egyptian dance in even when the moves are powerful. Discover the technique behind the grace and power. Leila will present the technique within the framework of musical interpretation so the "why" will also be addressed as well as the breakdown of "how."
“I just kept doing the same move over and over!” How many times have you said that after improvising on stage? This class will offer insights into the mysterious world of improvisation. It will give techniques to overcome repetition and to keeping your audience engaged while still feeding your soul and creativity as an artist.
This class will present some of the great classic singers of Egypt. There will be a breakdown of the music, lyric translation and historical background. Attention to each dancer’s personal interpretation of the music will be addressed: how to take the song and make it your own.
Beledi can be ultimate improvisation to the quintessential Egyptian music. Leila will deconstruct the Beledi to provide a firm understanding of the musical structure then build it back up as a dialogue between the music, dancer and the audience.
Leila teaches her exquisite dance style in workshops around the world. She draws on years of knowledge of the culture behind the dance as well as thousands of hours on stage in Egypt. She has a special skill for helping dancers learn the essense of Egyptian dance, explaining the differences between styles, techniques, and motivations.
Leila has been one of the most popular working dancers in Cairo for the last 13 years. While in Egypt she performed for parties, dignitaries, and weddings in Egypt and throughout Europe and the Arabian Gulf. She also danced continuously for Nile cruises, in the best hotels and concerts on television. Leila is also a well-known actress and model and is a recognizable personality throughout the Middle East being involved in hundreds of TV show, music videos, commercials and films.
Leila has produced some of the best-loved dance CDs today, utilizing a unique "live sound" in her productions. Her DVDs are the top selling belly dance DVDs on Amazon, as well as being thoughtful and sound Egyptian dance instruction. Leila was the founder of Camp Negum, a yearly live music dance festival in Egypt that focused on exposing dancers to the culture behind the dance. Her writings about dance and culture are utilized by scholars and dancers around the world.
